Now That’s More Like It

I like Paul Friesen. He tells it like it is. I seriously cracked up when in his Winnipeg Sun column he dubbed yesterdays clash between the two worst teams in the CFL the “Toilet Bowl.” Upon reflection, those two words really are keeping me in check as I look forward from the game and a well deserved win.
As the 22,000 plus fans (and I’m talking paid not actually attended) left the stadium yesterday, those who did show up were split into two very distinctive camps. Yet again as in one of my past blogs, there were the “Hopeful” group. Then there was the “Realistic” group. Here’s the difference:
The “Hopefuls” were saying we played a complete game, with solid leadership at the QB position. One person could be overheard saying now the Bombers “have the confidence to beat Edmonton next week.” Another was convinced that a total team effort “would yield consistency” from here on. Woaaaaaaa….. you may want to slow up a bit.
This brings me to the second group of fans – the Realists. Yes we beat Toronto. We are 4 – 8 and they are 3 – 9. WOO HOO. Fact: Now we are the second worst team in the CFL. However, I did notice a difference in the team.
Michael Bishop was clearly playing with a chip on his shoulder. The kind of chip that says “I’m going to be a leader.” He was chirping at the Argos at every chance. He called the team together in a moment of reflection after the bench clearing shoving match ended. The defence was solid. Receivers were good. I’d single them out but honestly, with not one receiver from day one of camp in the line up makes it tough to remember names. Special teams were doing what they needed to. I was a little concerned with how the Argo’s got in on our kicker constantly but hey… they don’t put pictures on trophies.
As the game moved on, Toronto seemed to be stealing momentum in the fourth. However; the Bombers got some divine intervention on the Argo’s last drive a la the heavens opening up and pouring when they were clearly in a long passing situation. But really, I’m sure Coach Kelly and crew are willing to take help where ever they can get it these days.
Now I don’t want to be all doom and gloom. We won and played well. There is something to build upon here. “Today” as Craig Ferguson would say, “is a good day.” Not for America but for Bomber Nation. I will not be awarding the Crappy Honker Award. Not after an effort like that. I remain an Angry Bomber Fan and will do so until we win the Grey Cup. To do otherwise would mean a level of complacency, lack of effort, and heart that yours truly has accused the team of having.
I remain a fan. I am hopeful. But I am still angry. GO BLUE!!!
