Crappy Honker Award

by H.F. Salisbury
I was so hoping that I would not be awarding this again; however, the football gods certainly were not Bomber fans yesterday. So…
In the great tradition of recognizing “Cactus” Jack Wells and the Happy Honker Award given out on C-Job radio here in Winnipeg, I present for you the second instalment of the Crappy Honker Award given to an individual(s) for a Happy unforgivable performance directly related to the continued floundering of our once beloved Winnipeg Blue Bombers.fantastic
This edition is not as straight forward to award as the inaugural one. There are many nominations to consider:
Adarius Bowman. Yes he has been our best receiver but dropping a very catchable pass in the end zone in a game that close certainly gets him some votes.
Our gunslinger of a QB, Michael Bishop went 13 of 32 with three interceptions. But wait, even worse than those stats, was the interception he threw on a forced play that had BOTH Edwards and Bowman wide open with nothing but the shadow of the west side stands between the receivers and the end zone.
As bad as the above is, the winner of this addition of the Crappy Honker Award goes to Kicker Alexis Serna. We lost this game by three points. He is directly responsible for leaving four points off the scoreboard via two missed Field Goals. These were Field Goals that were with the wind at his back and from very makeable distances. The Bombers could have won the game with those points but as the old saying goes “If ifs and buts were candy and nuts we’d all have a Merry Christmas.”
Furthering his nomination for the Crappy Honker Award was his punting. While not our regular Punter (Mike Renauld is injured and out for the year) Serna was out punted by an average of over 9 yards. His kicking average was only 36 yards. Pathetic.
Serna has been a bright spot on the Bombers this year but as another old saying goes… everybody gets a turn. Too bad his cost us the game.
